Global obesity is on the rise and the latest figures show that the number of overweight people worldwide will double by 2015.

World weight figures are again under the spotlight as the latest figures released by the UN show that there are more overweight people in the world than those who are undernourished.

Obesity is becoming a world health problem as more and more people fail to keep their diets and weight under check and continue to consume diets that are rich in fat and carbohydrates.

Combined with the rise in overweight and obese people, come the inevitable rises in heart attacks, high blood pressure cases and diabetes, never mind the illnesses such as cancer, which can be indirectly associated with obesity as well.

When you look at some of the figures stated below, it is important that you are looking at the figures related to obese people which can be defined as those that are grossly overweight. The statistics related to those that are just overweight are just too frightening to even look at.

Statistics record that America is now the leader in obese people with a conservative figure of 30.6% of all adults being obese. USA is followed by Mexico at 24.2% and the UK at 23%. In the UK alone it is estimated that more than half of the population is overweight.

Let’s say that Jon is on Weight Watchers and he is committed to losing weight. He brings pasta with ricotta and spinach to lunch at work and for dinner has the salisbury steak. Well in just those two meals, Jon has consumed over 1,500 mg of sodium.

The guidelines for sodium intake are around 2,300 mg daily, but drop to 1,500 mg per day if you are over 51, have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney issues.

If Jon in our example is over 51, he is in trouble with his current eating plan. He thinks he’s being healthy based on points when he is in fact headed for trouble.

With the resent studies showing that, for the first time in history, the obesity rate has surpassed the world hunger rate, part of our responsibility as parents is to teach our children how to lead healthy lives now and when they are adults. The best time to start teaching lessons like these to children is when they’re young, before unhealthy choices become bad habits. When you pass on healthy habits to your kids, it’s important to practice what you preach. In other words…LEAD BY EXAMPLE! Just telling your kids what to do won’t work—they need to see you choosing healthy behaviors too.

Our children are suffering from poor nutrition and lack of physical activity.

Children in the United States are gaining more weight than ever before. The obesity rate has tripled in the 25 years. They’re eating too many high-fat, high-sugar foods and are spending less time being physically active. Weight problems that develop during childhood can lead to weight-related illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes later in life.

Why is this happening? Because of lack of education on the importance of nutrition…plain and simple. Not enough parents and educators are leading by example or educating children on how to be healthy and the incredible importance of it…basically, as a nation, we are showing our children how to be unhealthy and die at earlier ages…THAT’S RIGHT….by not showing our children at early ages, why they should eat better and take care of themselves, we are teaching them that its ok to be unhealthy and make unhealthy eating choices.

These unhealthy lifestyles lead to a number of health problems. Child obesity is big issue because obesity is a door for many dangerous diseases like diabetes, heart disease, depression, high blood pressure, high-reaching cholesterol, lowered self esteem etc.

Who is at fault?!?……EVERY SINGLE PARENT THAT DOES NOT LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND SHOW THEIR CHILDREN THE RIGHT WAY TO EAT AND BE HEALTHY.

So, if YOU are overweight or at least not taking measures to correct that problem…then guess what…..YOU are part of the problem and YOU are teaching your children to follow in your footsteps.

Sorry for being so direct, but we all owe it to our children.

1)   Lead by example – what are YOU doing now that will teach your children healthy habits for THEIR future?

2)   Pay attention to the kinds of food you buy. Limit the amount of “junk food” your kids eat. Instead, have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available.

3)   Serve a variety of healthy foods and use appropriate portion sizes.

4)   Encourage your child to drink plenty of water or milk instead of empty-calorie fruit drinks and soda.

5)   Limit the amount of time your children spend watching television, using the computer or playing video games.

6)   Make physical activity part of your family’s routine. Take a walk, visit the community pool or go for a bike ride together. Encourage your children to participate in extracurricular activities.

Its time to take action and reverse this trend with our children and keep them strong and healthy.
